Celebrating Earth Day

Earth Day! Whoa! Earth Day's pretty cool because then I have an excuse to sit out by my pond doing absolutely nothing. I also have an excuse to pamper my cat Sydney (aka Muffins). Sydney is a very spoiled Ragdoll. He hates being held, doesn't come when called and knows exactly when to step on your laptop. Sometimes, if I want him to come sit on my bed with me, I just need to ignore him completely. I mean, not even looking at him or saying things like, "where's Sydney?". This is the only way he will come. He is a brat. If he was an actual child, he would probably be kicked out of school for being so annoying and rude.

Anyways, don't think that I hate my cat, because I don't hate him. I love him. I couldn't imagine living without him (which might sound a little bit weird considering I'm talking about a cat). Back to Earth Day! I used to love doing little projects for Earth Day, so I thought I'd share some of my favorites.

1. Grass Hair Dudes

Okay, these things are the coolest craft ever to do for Earth Day. Who thought of this? They should win the Nobel Peace prize or something big for this. So, it's super simple. All you need to do is cut up some nylon legs into pieces about 30 cm long. Tie one end and pour some dirt into the other end (by the way, you should probably be letting your kids do this unless you're like me and you just wanna do this craft for the sake of having a guy with grass hair, then totally go for). Then, pour some grass seeds into the dirt and mix it around. Tie the other end of the nylon shut and trim the ends of the nylon off so you have a ball looking thing. This is the head of your dude. You can put the 'head' onto the bottom of a small clay pot so it looks like the body. When I was little, I painted the pot to look like the man was wearing clothes, but if you paint the pot to look like a cat or dog, that would be adorable. When the grass starts to grow (and you should probably drip a tiny bit of water onto the head every day or so), the grass will look like hair. Cool!

2. Fairy Gardens

This is probably more for the little girls (you could adapt a similar idea and tell them they're building a jungle fortress), but this is so cute! These people whose image I have used, did their fairy garden in a pot, but if you're planning on making one to keep for just a few days, you could use a deep plate or a plastic bowl. All you do is go and find some cool plants from around your house or the park. Take a few clippings of the plants to put in your fairy garden. You could also build a small house out of popsicle sticks or cardboard to serve as a fairy house. Fill your bowl, plate or pot with dirt and arange the plants. Then create paths with pebbles and put your house somewhere in the landscape. As an added bonus, you could also research which plants you're using and identify them. This makes the craft educational (everything is better when it's educational!).

3. Earth Cookies

Food's awesome, especially when the food has tons of sugar! Find some recipe for sugar cookies and make them with your kid. Then, decorate them with blue and green frosting (I'm sorry, but ours will probably not look as professional as the cookies above do unless you have been trained in the art of cookie decorating and you are a decorating ninja). Name the different continents with your children (I'm so educational today!).

Three Earth Day crafts that will make your kids love Earth Day! Enjoy doing these!
